Jerwood Drawing Prize 2017
|
Visiting Jerwood as a start point of my gallery visitation in London was a perfect beginning to see different types of drawings in one place. It was a new experience for me to observe these various methods, materials, techniques and mediums in form of 2D and 3D drawings. This collection included some line drawings of certain shapes repetition which was reflecting the idea of digital drawings to me. It was fascinating for me to see those drawings that I used to think of them as digital drawn rather than hand-drawn version. But seeing them in hand-drawn forms reminded me how the usage of hands instead of computer can add another layer of value and admiration to a drawing.

These three dimensional installation and sculptural works were inviting the viewers to engage with them and to explore different possibilities of new visions by being in several positions around these art pieces. I as a viewer was experiencing the artists’ arts through my own perception of the space which I was forced to be in due to all those art pieces were creating a unique spatial atmosphere to explore. Observing how the idea of performative art in an opposite way which is the viewer should perform that art in a way was a learning moment for me to think and decide how and why I want my viewer to react to my art practice…

Beyond the Trace: Nicola Tyson

Tyson’s Figurative drawings in a humoristic and animalistic gesture were very joyful to watch for me. Her idea of using hand/subconscious and pencil as the leaders in her drawings rather than her mind was very noticeable in her result works which represent a new reading of body to me. The details of hair or piece of a dress were clearer to reflect an idea of a body than the actual body parts. Her approach to human body or figurative drawings made me to think how I can use a new way of thinking towards my own practice interest because her method is very effective to create a surreal dynamic world.

This exhibition was a collection of ten young Chinese artists’ works that were expressing their interpretation of Chinese cultural shifting during 1980s. It was a strange collection of works which depicted different social conflicts in very unusual direction and various mediums. This exhibition was more informative for me rather than the aesthetic aspect of those works.

Im/material : Painting in the Digital Age
|
Technology progress has always had an important influence on painting during time. However, it is only recently that painting has become conceptually and aesthetically infused by digital technologies to a point where the digital and analog realms can sometimes become undistinguished from one another. The artists in this show used digital technology as a way to go beyond the classical boundaries of painting or a means to take a new reading of its history. I could observe that they all question painting’s nature and its role in order to reinvent the painting’s concept.

The artist in this show was reflecting the pureness and simplicity in his works. However it was very clear the complexity of his collecting different material and natural elements. I found his arts as a reaction to the connection of nature and culture which was very interesting to rethink our relationship and our impact on nature. The fact that he had used the natural features to create his art in a purest way was very poetic and effective on his viewers. It was very engaging and pleasant for a viewer to be surrounded with all those natural and organic components.

The concept of this show was the fact that the artist had used drawing as a means to express his idea of time and life in order to capture the moments during a limited timetable like in his transit around London. Another method of drawing that he had used was in his three dimensional sculptures which were reflecting the line drawing of human figures in different scales. The idea of using drawing as various methods to represent different scales, movements, moments and feelings was very helpful for me to consider diverse types of drawings in my own practice.

THE NATIONAL GALLERY
Monochrome
This collection of monochrome drawings and paintings during time was very educational for me to know more about the history of how different artists had used monochrome technique. I really appreciated the development and the influence of monochrome technique in different methods and mediums. Or even the very different reading of neutrality in our contemporary art was a new way of thinking about inventing art in toneless performance which was a room with specific color tone where our eyes see everything in one uniform color. I am not sure if I can call it an art piece or a drawing.

This show was very unique in its own kind for me as an architect because all the sculptures were comparable with human scale which was reflecting the reverse idea of built forms of different types of buildings. Her choice of transparent materials was representing the idea of multi layering of our lives to me. The artist’s interpretation of architectural elements in her sculptures reminded me architectural models but in a larger scale which was very effective at the viewers’ eyes.

Impressionists in London
It was a great experience for me to see all those impressionist artists' paintings specially Monet’s Thames series. It was magical moment to look at those paintings from close distance. Their technique, choice of colors, simplicity and pureness in their paintings were magnificent to watch. Their artistic reaction to their living context ,London was shown in their choice of urban elements which were playing the role of their inspiration.
